Recycling Rechargeable Batteries
Go Green by recycling rechargeable batteries. Batteries are a serious problem in our land fills and we can do something about it. Most people are not aware that rechargeable digital camera batteries have heavy metals in them that does not break down in our land fills. They are pollution for ever! Not only that, but as they sit in the hot rotting garbage, they are a serious risk for explosion. Most major electronics retailers and some cell phone stores now offer a service where they collect and then properly recycle batteries, cell phones, PDA's and anything else with a battery inside. Makes it easy to do the right thing. Most batteries need to be recycled but the rechargable ones we are talking about are: - Nickel cadmium or NiCad. These are the older rechargeable battery. You guessed it: contains the heavy metal cadmium.
- Nickel metal hydride or NiMH. These are the most common type of rechargeable battery these days. These are the least hazardess to the environment.
- Lithium ion or Li-on. These are found in newer cameras. And yes, Lithium is another heavy metal.
So please do us all a favour and make recycling your batteries a priority. Happy Shooting!
